Lyrical Survey
11th-Jun-2002 02:40 pm
tell tale heart
As long-time readers of my journal know, I'm not the sort of person who would usually do this, but this lyrical survey looks fun. And I don't have any homework :-P Upon completion, I realized (again) that there aren't a lot of good song lyrics which stand well by themselves (folk music and ballads are, of course, exceptions). So while you read this, you need to sing along :-)
Male or Female?
stepping up boldly one put out his hand
he said, "i was just a child then, now i'm only a man"
--Pink Floyd, your possible pasts (the final cut)
Describe yourself
Taken by surprise/by the size of my brain
Knowing all the time the lies/all the games
Thinking up a storm/when it storms it's going to rain
Taking what's mine all the time/all the time
-- Days of the New, What's Left for Me? (Days of the New (Brown))

She asks me why...I'm just a hairy guy
I'm hairy noon and night; Hair that's a fright.
I'm hairy high and low,
Don't ask me why; don't know!
It's not for lack of bread
Like the Grateful Dead; darling
-- Hair (Hair sountrack)
How do others feel about you?
Hero -- the voice of reason
Against the howling mob
Hero -- the pride of purpose
In the unrewarding job

Hero -- not the champion player
Who plays the perfect game
Not the glamor boy
Who loves to sell his name
-- Rush, Nobody's Hero (Counterparts)
How do you feel about yourself?
May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,
Forever young, forever young,
May you stay forever young.
-- Bob Dylan, Forever Young (Planet Waves)
How do you feel about life?
Breathe, breathe in the air
Don't be afraid to care
Leave but don't leave me
Look around and choose your own ground
For long you live and high you fly
And smiles you'll give and tears you'll cry
And all you touch and all you see
Is all your life will ever be
-- Pink Floyd, Breathe In The Air (Dark Side of the Moon)
Describe where you live.
Fire... fire on the mountain
Fire... fire on the mountain
Fire... fire on the mountain
Fire... fire on the mountain
--Greatful Dead, Fire on the Mountain (Shakedown Street)

High, higher than the sun
...
You elevate my soul
I've got no self control
...
So high
Elevation
-- U2, Elevation (All That You Can't Leave Behind)
Share a few words of wisdom.
The memories of a man in his old age
Are the deeds of a man in his prime
You suffle in gloom in the sickroom
And talk to yourself 'till you die

Life is a short, warm moment
And death is a long cold rest
You get your chance to try
In the twinkling of an eye
Eighty years, with luck, or even less
-- Pink Floyd, Free Four (Obscured By Clouds)

While you are wasting your time on your enemies
Engulfed in a fever of spite
Beyond your tunnel vision reality fades
Like shadows into the night
...
So I open my door to my enemies
And I ask could we wipe the slate clean
But they tell me to please go fuck myself
You know you just can't win
-- Pink Floyd, Lost For Words (The Division Bell)

Are you cold forlorn, and hungry?
Are there lots of things you lack?
If your life's made up of misery,
Then dump the bosses off your back!

Are your clothes all torn and tattered?
Are you livin' in a shack?
Would you have your troubles scattered?
Then dump the bosses off your back!

Are you almost split asunder,
Loaded like a donkey's back?
Why don't you buck like thunder
And dump the bosses off your back!

All the agonies you suffer,
You could end with one good Whack.
Stand up brothers and sisters
And dump the bosses off your back!
-- traditional, Dump The Bosses Off Your Back
Describe your feelings right now.

-- Booker T and the M.G.'s, Green Onions (Green Onions)
What's love?
Close your eyes
Let me touch you now
Let me give you something
That is real

Close the door
Leave your fears behind
Let me give you
What you're giving me

You are the only thing
That makes me want to live at all
When I am with you
There's no reason to pretend that
When I am with you
I feel flames again

Just put me inside you
I would never ever leave
Just put me inside you
I would never ever leave you
-- VAST, Flames (Visual Audio Sensory Theater)

Love, love is a verb
Love is a doing word
Fearless on my breath
Gentle impulsion
Shakes me makes me lighter
Fearless on my breath

Teardrop on the fire
Fearless on my breath
-- Massive Attack, Teardrop (Mezzanine)
Why?
One day I'd like to be rich and famous
Maybe be funny like Andy and Amos
Be on TV and sing like Stevie
And have a girl who'll never leave me
But I'd really like a place where there could be no war
A bright and shiny world where there ain't no poor
Where there's opportunity; peace and unity
Where people can be what they want to be

And where Aparthied can never happen again
Where people don't judge by the color of your skin
Where I hold your hand and you hold mine
Where a helpful hand is never hard to find
A place where people care
Where no one can bear
When someone's hungry
With nothing there
Where the heart is never cold
Where the young are never needy
Where the old are never poor
Where the rich are never greedy

So bring the power to the people
The people to the power
'Cause now is the time
This is the hour
To stop thinkin about war
Start thinkin about peace
So on this life we can get another lease
And with a lesson to learn
A new direction to turn
So we can take it to the sky where we belong
Because for too long we been too wrong
We got the right notes but we play the wrong song

So stop thinkin' with your wallet and think with your mind
So we can move ahead instead of behind
We got the people sellin drugs, people are dyin'
Politicians talkin' and you know they're lyin'
Taxes for the poor, none for the rich
People starvin' in America, now ain't that a bummer

We got missles on the ground, lasers in space
Underground shelters just in case
That something goes boom certain doom
Cause in our hearts we didn't make enough room
For the love, it comes from up above
Let's stop talkin' war and let's offer the dove
Cause when it's done it's over, when it's over it's done
We look back at the war and see that nobody won
We want a better place for our daughters and our sons
Or life will be a blast... pardon the pun
-- Béla Fleck and the Flecktones, The Message (Three Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest)
